Saint Lucia Hurricane relief

The Living Water Community (LWC) in Soufriere, Saint Lucia has been very involved with hurricane relief from the very first week through being involved with hamper making at NEMO – Red Cross headquarters and Caritas in the first week after hurricane Tomas. In the second week we received aid from LWC Trinidad and LWC Barbados. Using the pre-assesment from NEMO and the Caritas distribution list we started off with a pre-administration of 800 families in need. Up to date we’ve been able to distribute nearly 900 hampers to people in need in and outside the Soufriere area (Bouton, Fond St.Jacques, Mini, Choiseul, Zennon, New Development, Diamond, Fond Cacao…) A special thanks to the many generous souls, local authorities, NEMO, Caritas, local men, women and teens for sharing their time, talent and treasure to make life a little more manageable for those in need. “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters

1735 Port of Castries St.lucia

In 1735 The principal station for the shipping is the Port of Castries, one of the safest and most extensive in the Antilles.* It is adorned with an excellent quay, and possesses a sufficient depth of water to allow the largest vessels to come to anchor close to the wharf. Its entrance is one third of a mile between the headlands of the Tapion and the Vigie ; and it is a mile and a half in receding depth. From the invariable direction of the trade wind, and the consequent difficulty of approaching the bay, no more than one vessel can enter at a time, whilst the largest fleet might safely ride at anchor within the basin, and stand out to sea at an hour’s notice.

The entrance to Port Castries is guarded on the south by theTapion and Half-moon batteries, and on the north by the Vigie. These defences command every approach to the bay, and with the aid of their natural ally, the trade-wind, can oppose an insuperable barrier to the ingress of any hostile fleet.
