</script><p>Posted by <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/users/profile/155620">Cyrus Shepard</a></p><p>Was SEOmoz affected by Google&#8217;s Panda Updates? It depends how you look at it. Since the first update hit in February of 2011, organic search traffic to SEOmoz has increased by 49%.</p> <p><img width="600" height="187" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/panda.png" alt="SEOmoz and panda" /></p> <p>To be fair, the <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/google-algorithm-change">dates that Panda hit</a> don&#8217;t match up to periods when we saw traffic gains. In this time period we&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors">rolled out original content</a>, <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/white-hat-seo-it-fing-works-12421">popular blog posts</a>, introduced <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/early-launch-of-serps-analysis-tool-june-linkscape-update">new tools</a> and made several SEO improvements. In a way, you could say we&#8217;re good at not getting penalized by Panda.</p> <p>Looking at the <a href="http://www.sistrix.com/blog/985-google-farmer-update-quest-for-quality.html">sites that lost the most traffic when Panda hit</a>, I&#8217;m amazed at how poorly formatted most of these sites remain, even months later. A few have made improvements, but it feels like many webmasters decided it just wasn&#8217;t worth the effort, gave up, or they simply didn&#8217;t know what to do.</p> <h2>Panda &#8211; The 2-Minute Nutshell Version</h2> <p>Panda starts off with human quality raters who look at hundreds of websites. Computers, using machine learning, are then brought in to mimic the human raters. When the algorithm becomes accurate enough at predicting what the humans scored, it&#8217;s then unleashed across millions of sites across the Internet.</p> <p>The point is: <strong>Panda starts off from a human point of view</strong>, not a machine&#8217;s. We can look at these sites with human eyes and see the obvious.</p> <p>Remember, Panda is a site-wide penalty, not a page penalty. So if a certain percentage of your pages fall below Panda&#8217;s quality algorithm, then the whole site suffers. Fix enough of these pages and you may recover.</p> <p>Note: I&#8217;ve used actual screenshots taken from sites well known to be hit by Panda. I don&#8217;t mean to call anybody out and I&#8217;m not picking on any particular site. On the contrary, we all have a lot to learn from these examples. Also, a lot of these topics are covered in Dr. Pete&#8217;s excellent post, <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/fat-pandas-and-thin-content">Fat Pandas and Thin Content</a>. It's well work a look.</p> <h3>1. Heavy Template Footprint</h3> <p>Do you ever look at a site and ask yourself, &#8220;<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0">Where&#8217;s the Beef?</a>&#8221; Consider the page below. How much original content exists above the fold?</p> <p><a href="http://www.essortment.com/list-small-suvs-57597.html"><img width="365" height="342" alt="Heavy Template Footprint" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/templatefootprint.png" /></a></p> <p>This template footprint creates a low ratio of original content. No one knows the exact threshold for what qualifies as duplicate content from a machine point of view, but this clearly<strong> violates all human standards</strong>.</p> <p>Here at SEOmoz, our PRO platform uses a 95% threshold to judge duplicate content. This means if 95% of all the code on your page matches another page, then it&#8217;s flagged as a duplicate. To check your own ratios, try this nifty <a href="http://www.duplicatecontent.net/">duplicate content tool.</a></p> <h3>2. Empty Content</h3> <p>Do you see pages that exist simply to link to other pages? I found this high authority page from <a href="http://www.faqs.org/faqs/">faq.org</a> in less than 10 seconds, which indicates there are plenty more.</p> <p><img width="608" height="159" alt="Empty Panda content" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/emptycontent.png" /></p> <p>Yep that&#8217;s the whole page right there. Or how about <a href="http://www.suite101.com/behavioural-psychology">this page from Suite101</a>? <strong>Eliminating these types of empty content pages</strong>, or just adding good material, will go a long way in eliminating Panda penalties.</p> <h3>3. Overlapping and Redundant Articles</h3> <p>Each page of your site should address a specific topic, instead of addressing a slightly different variation of a keyword phrase. How many variations of "Acai Berry Cleanse" does a website need?</p> <p><img width="350" height="326" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/aciaberry(2).png" alt="How much acia berry?" /></p> <p>The example above is from a high profile "content farm." This is one of the many reasons I believe Panda hit article sites so hard &#8211; pages and pages of overlapping articles that targeted keywords instead of humans. <strong>Combining these articles into a few, highly usable resources</strong> would cut down on the confusion.</p> <h3>4. High Ad Ratio</h3> <p>I understand the temptation. We can&#8217;t escape it. Google even <a href="http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=17954">tells us to plaster ads all over our site</a>. But the Adwords team is separate from the spam team lead by Matt Cutts. Don&#8217;t expect them to both give the same advice.</p> <p><img width="600" height="290" align="middle" alt="Don't be like adwords" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/adsense-yes.jpg" /></p> <p>Optimizing for Adsense does not mean optimizing for search. I&#8217;m glad Google keeps their departments separate, but <strong>more consistent messaging</strong> from the company as a whole would reduce webmaster frustration.</p> <h3>5. Affiliate Links and Auto Generated Content</h3> <p>If a machine built your pages with minimal human intervention, Google wants to devalue you. We see this time and time again with multiple affiliate sites across the web.</p> <p><img width="608" height="245" alt="Ouch!" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/affiliate.png" /></p> <p>Disclaimer: I predict that someday machines will be able to produce web pages indistinguishable from human generated content. Until that time, avoid it.</p> <h2>Beating Panda &#8211; Reduce the Sins</h2> <p>It&#8217;s my personal belief that the above 5 sins, alone or in combination, <strong>account for the vast majority of Panda penalties</strong>. Yet webmasters seem perplexed when faced with fixing the these problems.</p> <p>Dr. Pete pointed me to a <a href="http://www.webmasterworld.com/msn_microsoft_search/4328329.htm">post on Webmasterworld from Duane Forrester</a>. Although he&#8217;s talking about Bing, he explains the Panda situation well.</p> <blockquote> <p>If a user searches on Bing, we return the best SERP we can for the query. The user clicks on the first result (as we&#8217;d expect, normally). They hit YOUR website, and&#8230;</p> <p>1 &#8211; are so engaged they forget about the rest of the Internet for a few minutes and bask in your glory, getting the information they wanted, and more.</p> <p>2 &#8211; are so dismayed they immediately hit their back button, suddenly popping back onto our radar, alerting us to the fact they were displeased with the result we just showed them &#8211; why else would they suddenly come back, without consuming your content? Displeased.<br />???????? -Duane Forrester</p> </blockquote> <p>This is the future of the web &#8211; when the equivalent of human eyes look at every page of your site. Would you want your father to visit your website? Would you want your mother to shop there?</p> <p>Rand had it right when he told us to <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-googles-panda-update-changed-seo-best-practices-forever-whiteboard-friday">improve engagement metrics</a>. Make legitimate, on-site fixes that actually improve your visitor&#8217;s experience. You&#8217;ll find that reducing bounce rate, increasing page views and time-on-site has the side effect of making your visitors, and you, happier.</p><br /><p>Do you like this post? <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/thumbs/add/blog/13918/1/0">Yes</a> <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/thumbs/add/blog/13918/0/0">No</a> </p><div>

</script><p>Posted by <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/users/profile/13440">Lindsay</a></p><p>As you've probably learned, you can't always rely on search engine spiders to do an effective job when they visit and index your website. Left to their own devices bots can generate duplicate content, perceive important pages as junk, index content that shouldn&#8217;t serve as a user entry point, and many other issues. There are a number of tools at our disposal that allow us to make the most of bot activity on a website such as the meta robots tag, robots.txt, x-robots-tag, canonical tag and others.</p> <div><div><img width="200" height="110" align="right" alt="robot rodents" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/shutterstock_62161033.jpg" /></div> Today, I&#8217;m covering robot control technique conflicts. In an effort to REALLY get their point across, webmasters will sometimes implement more than one robot control technique to keep the search engines away from a page. Unfortunately, these techniques can sometimes contradict each other: One technique hides the instruction of the other or link juice is lost.?</div> <div>?</div> <div>What happens when a page is disallowed in the robots.txt file and has a noindex meta tag in place? How about a noindex tag and a canonical tag?</div> <div>?</div> <div><h2>Quick Refresher</h2></div> <div>Before we get into the conflicts, let&#8217;s go over each of the main robot access restriction techniques as a refresher.</div> <div>?</div> <p><span><strong>Meta Robots Tag</strong></span></p> <div>The Meta robots tag creates page-level instructions for search engine bots. The Meta robots tag should be included in the head section of the HTML document and might look like this:</div> <div>?</div> <div align="left"><html><br /> <head><br /> <br /> <meta name=&#8221;ROBOTS&#8221; content=&#8221;NOINDEX&#8221; /><br /> </head><br /> <br /> Below is a table of the generally supported commands along with a description of their purpose.</html></div> <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="1"> <tbody> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div><b>Command</b></div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div><b>Description</b></div></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div>NOINDEX</div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div>Prevents the page from being included in the index</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div>NOFOLLOW</div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div>Prevents bots from following the links on a page</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div>NOARCHIVE</div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div>Prevents a cached copy of the page from being available in the search results</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div>NOSNIPPET</div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div>Prevents a description from appearing below the page link in the search results AND prevents caching of the page</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div>NOODP</div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div>Prevents the Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org) description of the page from being displayed in the search results</div></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="102" valign="top"><div>NODIR</div></td> <td width="547" valign="top"><div>Prevents Yahoo! Directory titles and descriptions for the page from being displayed in the search results</div></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <div>?<b><br /> </b></div> <div><span><strong>Canonical Tag</strong></span></div> <div>?</div> <div>The canonical tag is a page level meta tag that is placed in the HTML header of a webpage. It tells the search engines which URL is the canonical?version of the page being displayed. Its purpose is to keep duplicate content out of the search engine index while consolidating your pages strength into one &#8216;canonical&#8217; page.</div> <div>?</div> <div>The code looks like this:</div> <div>?</div> <div><link rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/quality-wrenches.htm"/></div> <div>?<b><br /> </b></div> <div><span><strong>X-Robots-Tag</strong></span></div> <div>?</div> <div>Since 2007 Google and other search engines have supported the X-Robots-Tag as a way to inform the bots about crawling and indexing preferences in the HTTP Header used to serve the file. The X-Robots-Tag is very useful for controlling indexation of non-HTML media types such as PDF documents.</div> <div>As an example, if a page is to be excluded from the search index the directive would look like this:</div> <div>?</div> <div>X-Robots-Tag: noindex<b><br /> </b></div> <div>?</div> <div><span><strong>Robots.txt </strong></span></div> <div>?</div> <div>Robots.txt allows for some control of search engine robot access to a site, however it does not guarantee a page won&#8217;t be crawled and indexed. It should be employed only when necessary, and no robots should be blocked from crawling an area of the site unless there are solid business and SEO reasons to do so. I almost always recommend using the Meta tag &#8220;noindex&#8221; for keeping pages out of the index instead.</div> <div>?</div> <div>?</div> <div><h2>Avoiding Conflicts</h2></div> <div>It is a bad idea to use any two of the following robot access control methods at once.</div> <ul> <li>Meta Robots 'noindex'</li> <li>Canonical Tag (when pointing to a different URL)</li> <li>Robots.txt Disallow</li> <li>X-Robots-Tag</li> </ul> <p>In spite of your strong desire to really keep a page out of the search results, one solution is always better than two. Let's take a look at what happens when you have various combinations of robot access control techniques in place for a single URL.</p> <div>?</div> <div><span><span><strong>Meta Robots 'noindex' &#038; Canonical Tag</strong></span></span><b><br /> </b></div> <div>?</div> <div>If your goal is to consolidate one URL&#8217;s link strength into another URL and you don&#8217;t have <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/complete-guide-to-rel-canonical-how-to-and-why-not">any better solutions at your disposal</a>, go with the canonical tag alone. Do not shoot yourself in the foot by also using the meta robots &#8216;noindex&#8217; tag. If you use both bot herding techniques, it is probable that the search engines won&#8217;t find your canonical tag at all. You&#8217;ll miss out on the link strength reassignment benefit of a canonical tag because the meta robots &#8216;noindex&#8217; tag has ensured that he canonical tag won&#8217;t be seen! Oops.</div> <div><strong><br /> </strong></div> <div><span><strong>Meta Robots 'noindex' &#038; X-Robots-Tag 'noindex'</strong></span><b><br /> </b></div> <div>?</div> <div>These tags are redundant. I can&#8217;t see any way that having both in place for the same page would directly cause damage to your SEO. If you can alter the head of a document to implement at meta robots &#8216;noindex&#8217;, you shouldn&#8217;t be using the x-robots-tag anyway.</div> <div>?</div> <div><span><strong>Robots.txt Disallow</strong><span> &#038; </span><strong>Meta Robots 'noindex' </strong></span></div> <div>?</div> <div>This is the most common conflict I see.</div> <div>?</div> <div>The reason I love the meta robots &#8216;noindex&#8217; tag is that it is effective at keeping pages out of the index, yet it can still pass value from the no-indexed page to deeper content that is linked from it. This is a win-win and no link love is lost.</div> <div>?</div> <div>The robots.txt disallow entry restricts the search engines from looking at anything on the page (including potentially valuable internal links) but does not keep the page&#8217;s URL out of the index. What is the good in that? I once wrote a post on <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/blog/serious-robotstxt-misuse-high-impact-solutions">this topic alone</a>.</div> <div>?</div> <div>If both protocols are in place, the robots.txt ensures that the meta robots &#8216;noindex&#8217; is never seen. You&#8217;ll get the effect of a robots.txt disallow entry and miss out on all the meta robots &#8216;noindex&#8217; goodness.</div> <div>?</div> <div>Below I'll take you through a simple example of what happens when these two protocols are implemented together.</div> <div>?</div> <div>Here is a screenshot from the Google SERP for a page that is disallowed in the robots.txt and also has a meta robots 'noindex' in place. The fact that it is in Google's index at all is your first clue of a problem.</div> <div>?</div> <div><img width="638" height="73" align="middle" alt="SERP Example" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/robots-and-meta-noindex-SERP(1).jpg" /></div> <div>???<br /> Source: <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=secure+login&#038;start=20">Google SERP</a></div> <div>?</div> <div>Here you can see the meta robots 'noindex' page. Too bad the search engines can't see it.</div> <div>?</div> <div><img width="638" height="211" align="middle" alt="source code showing noindex" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/robots-and-meta-noindex-SOURCE(3).jpg" /></div> <div>?</div> <div>Source: <a href="https://mail2web.com/login/?lid=0&#038;il=1">View source of this page</a></div> <div>?</div> <div>Here you can see that the entire subdomain is disallowed in the robots.txt, ensuring that useful meta robots 'noindex' tags are never seen.</div> <div>?</div> <div><img width="638" height="91" align="middle" alt="robots.txt disallowing all content" src="http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/robots-and-meta-noindex-ROBOTSTXT(1).jpg" /></div> <div>??</div> <div>Source: <a href="https://mail2web.com/robots.txt">Robots.txt file</a></div> <div>?</div> <div>Assuming mail2web.com is sincere in it's desire to keep everything out of the search engines, they'd be better off using the meta robots 'noindex' exclusively.</div> <div>?</div> <div><span><strong>Canonical Tag &#038; X-Robots-Tag 'noindex'</strong></span><b><br /> </b></div> <div>?</div> <div>If you can alter the <head> of a document, the x-robots-tag likely isn&#8217;t your best route for restricting access in the first place. The x-robots-tag works better if you reserve it for non-html file types like PDF and JPEG. If you have both of these in place, I&#8217;d imagine that the search engines would ignore the canonical tag and fail to reassign link value as hoped.</head></div> <div>?</div> <div>If you are able to add a canonical tag to a page, you shouldn&#8217;t be using an x-robots-tag.</div> <div>?</div> <div><span><strong>Canonical Tag &#038; Robots.txt Disallow</strong></span><b><br /> </b></div> <div>?</div> <div>If you have a robots.txt disallow in place for a page, the canonical tag will never be seen. No link juice passed. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Sorry.</div> <div>?</div> <div><span><strong>X-Robots-Tag 'noindex' &#038; Robots.txt Disallow</strong></span><b><br /> </b></div> <div>?</div> <div>Because the x-robots tag exists in the HTTP Response Header, it is possible that these two implementations could intermingle and both be seen by the search engines. However, the statements would be redundant and the robots.txt entry would ensure that no links within the page would be discovered. Once again, we have a bad idea on our hands.</div> <div>?</div> <div><span>---------------------------------</span></div> <div>?</div> <div><strong>Bonus Points!</strong></div> <div>?</div> <div>I searched high and low for a live example to share here. I wanted to find a PDF that was both robots.txt disallowed AND noindexed with the x-robots-tag. Sadly, I came up empty handed. I'd have dug around all night, but this post had to go live at some point! Please, I beg you, beat me at my own game.</div> <div>?</div> <div>My process was as follows:</div> <div><span>1.<span>?????? </span></span>Use <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=site:com/robots.txt+%22pdf%22">this handy search query</a> to identify robots.txt files that call out PDF directories or files.</div> <div><span>2.<span>?????? </span></span>Start up your HTTP reader. I use <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/httpfox/">HTTPfox</a>.</div> <div><span>3.<span>?????? </span></span>Call up the robots.txt disallowed PDF file and check the Response Header for the X-Robots-Tag noindex entry.</div> <div>?</div> <div>Good luck! Let me know when you find one!</div> <div>?</div> <div><span>----------------------------------</span></div> <p>?</p> <p>The concept I've been driving at here is fairly straight-forward. Don't go over-board with your robot control techniques. Choose the best method for the scenario and back away from the machine. You'll be much better off.</p> <p>Happy Optimizing!</p> <p><a href="http://www.shutterstock.com">Robot Rabbits from Shutterstock</a></p><br /><p>Do you like this post? <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/thumbs/add/blog/13928/1/0">Yes</a> <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/thumbs/add/blog/13928/0/0">No</a> </p><div>

</script><p>Posted by <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/users/profile/44209">richardbaxterseo</a></p><p>A few weeks ago I attended (and had the honour of speaking at) <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/mozcon">Mozcon</a>. Mozcon is without a doubt the best SEO conference I&#8217;ve ever been to, and I&#8217;ve been to <span>a lot</span>. It rocks to be amongst so many stars! Anyhoo, just to say thanks to the Mozteam for flying me over to sunny Seattle, I brought them a new toy to play with. And the best part, it&#8217;s free for anyone to use.</p> <p>Introducing the Adwords API Extension for Excel.</p> <h2>Oh Gosh, Richard Made a Video</h2> <p>My team were insistent &#8211; no <a href="http://seogadget.co.uk/handy-how-to-video-for-our-keyword-tools/">light piano jazz this time</a>. It sucks. I have no idea what&#8217;s wrong with them &#8211; elevator music is awesome. So here&#8217;s a quick tour in my best British accent. Think: &#8220;shine yer shoes, Guvnor?&#8221; (If you&#8217;ve ever heard Rand&#8217;s Brit accent attempts, you&#8217;ll know where I&#8217;m coming from with that.)</p> <p></p> <h2>Get Yourself an Adwords API Key</h2> <p>Obviously that&#8217;s a pretty quick tour in the video, so it didn&#8217;t include the fiendishly simple set up process. So you know, you&#8217;ll need an <a href="https://adwords.google.com/support/aw/adwordsapi/bin/answer.py?hl=en-GB&#038;answer=15104">Adwords API key</a>. Adwords API keys are available to My Client Center account holders. Get one of <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/adwords/myclientcenter/">those from here</a>. For whatever reason, it&#8217;s tough to migrate to an MCC account from a plain old Adwords account, so take my advice and create a fresh Google account login for your Adwords API.</p> <h2>Learn the Queries</h2> <p>Learning the queries is pretty easy. Here are the most important:</p> <p><strong>getAdWordAvg()</strong></p> <p>getAdWordAvg(keyword,"[MATCHTYPE]","[COUNTRYCODE]","DEVICE")</p> <p><strong>Example:</strong> =getAdWordAvg(A1,"EXACT","GB","WEB")</p> <p><strong>Description:</strong> returns average search volume from the adwords API. Matchtype accepts broad, exact and phrase match. Country codes can be found in the Adwords documentation and devices can be mobile or web.</p> <p><strong>arrayGetAdWordStats()</strong></p> <p>arrayGetAdWordStats([TABLE],"[MATCHTYPE]","[COUNTRYCODE]","DEVICE")</p> <p><strong>Example:</strong> =arrayGetAdWordStats(myKWlist,"EXACT","US","MOBILE")</p> <p><strong>Description:</strong> array formula (auto adds {} brackets) will return data from a list of keywords in a table (average search volume and seasonal data).</p> <p><strong>arrayGetAdWordIdeas()</strong></p> <p>arrayGetAdWordIdeas([TABLE],"[MATCHTYPE]","[COUNTRYCODE]","DEVICE",[NoOfResults])</p> <p><strong>Example:</strong> =arrayGetAdWordIdeas(Table1,"BROAD","US","WEB",20)</p> <p><strong>Description:</strong> array formula (auto adds {} brackets) will return suggestions from a list of keywords in a table (average search volume and seasonal data).</p> <h2>I Want, I Want! Gimme the Download! Gimme!</h2> <p>Just so you know, the <a href="http://seogadget.co.uk/google-adwords-plugin-excel/">full installation guide</a> is over on SEOgadget. All you have to do is <a href="http://seogadget.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/seogadget-excel-plugin.zip">download this zip file</a> and run setup.xls. That&#8217;s all!</p> <p>After years of working with Excel, I&#8217;m still really excited by it. It&#8217;s solved a lot of problems for me in the past and I'd just like to personally thank my chief data wrangler and master datasmith of Choice, <a href="http://blog.gobansaor.com/2011/07/30/the-civilian-datasmith-a-live-specimen/">Tom Gleeson</a>. He rocks.</p> <p>I&#8217;d really love to hear your thoughts, feedback and of course how you&#8217;re using the extension to work smarter in your keyword research.</p><br /><p>Do you like this post? <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/thumbs/add/blog/13734/1/0">Yes</a> <a href="http://www.seomoz.org/thumbs/add/blog/13734/0/0">No</a> </p><div>
