Here are many reasons why St Lucia is such a popular destination among holidaymakers, whether you’re heading there for the sun, sea and sand or you’re more interested in uncovering the island’s natural wonders and historical charms.

The island’s natural beauty is a large part of its appeal, and while you can look forward to the same pristine beaches, clear waters and spectacular sunsets as you can elsewhere in the Caribbean, there are a few significant differences that make St Lucia stand out. Chief among these is Mt Soufriere, famed for being the world’s only drive-in volcano that offers incredible views of the crater, gas streams and sulphur pools.

You shouldn’t ignore the beaches of course, which are enduringly popular with visitors for a reason. One of the most attractive is Anse de Sable, whether you’re hoping to sunbathe or to take part in all types of water sports – from windsurfing to parasailing. If you’re keen on scuba diving, there are many world-class dive sites around the coast of St Lucia too, including Anse Chastanet and the Fairy Land. Wrecks such as the Lesleen M Shipwreck and the beautiful coral formations of sites such as the Coral Gardens create a mesmerising aquatic landscape.

By far the most spectacular of St Lucia’s marine species are its whales, including endangered humpbacks and sperm whales, which can be seen up close by taking whale watching trips or just by sailing to nearby islands. Back on dry land, the local wildlife of St Lucia is also well worth seeking out on treks into the interior.

All this natural diversity can make way for St Lucia’s human story too, and you’ll find lots of places to explore the island’s colourful past on cultural St Lucia holidays. Taking a plantation tour can be the best way to see and empathise with the plight of the slaves who used to work in the sugar fields, while many historical buildings still survive from that period too. Locations such as Fond d’Or Nature Historic Park can make for fascinating days out for people of all ages.

To complete your holiday in St Lucia, there are many other destinations you might like to visit – from the Diamond Botanical Gardens to the Pigeon Island National Landmark. Wherever you’re staying in St Lucia, you won’t be too far away from significant historical sites and areas of outstanding scenic beauty.
