Director Kelly Schwarze sat down with Filmmakers Notebook at Theatre7 here in Las Vegas to discuss his fourth feature film, the racist satire “You People.” The comedy, which takes on societal issues like unemployment and ethnic stereotypes, revolves around the creation of a new board game concept by laid off workers and the ensuing havoc that ensues from their efforts.
“You People” premiered at the Temecula Valley Film Festival and has been screened at other events since then including JamFest/Indie Fest and a film festival in Myrtle Beach. Kelly spoke with us about how merchandising a real board game was part of his marketing plan for this film and why he decided to become his own on-line retailer preferring to self-distribte this project after an unsatisfactory experience with a distributor on one of his earlier movies. Schwarze offers good advice regarding many of the business aspects involved in independent filmmaking, so I’m sure you people will find his interview as informative as it is entertaining.
