Jamaica’s annual Bob Marley celebration canceled

Smile Jamaica, the annual concert celebration of Bob Marley’s birthday, is being canceled this year due to what organizers are calling numerous circumstances, according to the Jamaica Observer.

A spokesperson for Smile Jamaica told the Observer that the organization hopes to celebrate Marley’s life next year, but for 2010, “there are some extenuating circumstances that just cannot be ignored and there’s no way we could proceed with the concert bearing them in mind.” The extenuating circumstances were not specified.

Event organizers, Ghetto Youth International, said efforts will be stepped up to make a 2011 staging possible.

Marley’s family reportedly will celebrate his birthday and honor his legacy in private.
